The Chargers have placed the "non-exclusive" franchise tag on WR Vincent Jackson, likely keeping him in San Diego for another season.

Jackson can still negotiate a contract with another team, but if he is given an offer, the Chargers can either match the proposal or receive two first-round picks as compensation. The Chargers and Jackson also can negotiate a new long-term contract.

"Vincent has been a valuable contributor to our team," Chargers GM A.J. Smith said in a statement. "We want him to be a Charger."

The franchise number for wide receivers in 2011 is expected to be around $12 million.

The way we see it

Jackson held out for part of last season due to his unhappiness with not having a long-term contract. He returned in Week 12 of 2010, gaining 17.7 yards per reception with three touchdowns.

While it remains unlikely that the Chargers will be able to work out a long-term deal with Jackson, a Pro Bowler in '09, the Bolts should at least get one more season out of him before he hits the open market.
