The Cardinals are pursuing Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler to be their new defensive coordinator, according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

Butler said before the Super Bowl that there is not a clause in his contract that would name him the Steelers' defensive coordinator in waiting behind Dick LeBeau, whose contract has expired.

Butler has been with the Steelers for eight seasons, directing one of the league's top linebacking corps annually.

The way we see it

There is a question of whether or not the Steelers will allow Butler to interview for the position, especially if they do expect him to be next in line behind LeBeau. The Cardinals are one of the few teams that still has a coordinator vacancy and needs to improve a defense that finished 31st in 2010. Plus, there are several former Steelers coaches on the Arizona staff, led by head coach Ken Whisenhunt, that Butler would be reunited with if he heads to the desert.
