The Eagles have named former offensive line coach Juan Castillo as their new defensive coordinator and added Howard Mudd to take his spot as the O-line coach.

Castillo has been an offensive coach with the Eagles since 1995 but got his start as a defensive coach with Texas A&M-Kingsville in 1982.

"We are very excited to introduce Juan Castillo as the new defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles. At the same time, I'd like to also formally introduce Howard Mudd as the offensive line coach," Eagles head coach Andy Reid said. "… Obviously, this is a great opportunity, not only for the Eagles, but also for Juan. It's a tribute to the hard work, the diligence and the kind of football coach he is. I think if you have the opportunity to talk to any player, if you have an opportunity to talk to any coach that has been a Philadelphia Eagle, and many coaches throughout the league, what might seem a little strange is just a very confident move, and one that will take our defense to another level. I look forward to that combination of [defensive line coach] Jim Washburn and Juan Castillo and the new additions that we'll add here with time."

Mudd has coached in the NFL since 1977 and was most recently the offensive line coach of the Colts. Mudd retired following the Colts' loss to the Saints in Super Bowl XLIV. He had served as Colts' OL coach for 12 years, the longest tenure of any assistant coach at the time.

"I think we know Howard Mudd is a Hall of Fame caliber offensive line coach," Reid said. "If they put offensive line coaches in the Hall of Fame, you are going to look at Howard Mudd. That guy right there left a legacy in the league as an offensive line coach. He was semi-retired there. To get him to come back was an important piece of this puzzle."

The way we see it

Castillo has coached in Philadelphia for the past 13 seasons and is familiar with the team. After interviewing several candidates outside the organization, the Eagles chose to stick with a familiar name.

The hiring of Mudd is a great one, adding one of the most respected OL coaches to a staff that now includes one of the most respected DL coaches in Jim Washburn, who left Tennessee after a long tenure with the Titans last month.
