The Browns filled three spots on their coaching staff on Monday, hiring Mark Whipple as QB coach, Bill Davis as LB coach and Dwaine Board as DL coach, according to various published reports.

The hiring of Whipple, most recently offensive coordinator at the University of Miami (Fla.), was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter and confirmed by The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer and Akron Beacon-Journal. Whipple was fired after the 2010 season.

The Plain Dealer reported the hiring of Davis, which was confirmed by the Beacon-Journal. Davis was fired as Cardinals' defensive coordinator earlier in January.

Also, The Plain Dealer reported the hiring of Board, who replaces Bryan Cox, who had coached the Browns' defensive linemen the last two seasons. Board was let go as the Raiders' DL coach in January.

ESPN reported the Browns may forgo hiring an offensive coordinator after the hiring of Whipple.

The way we see it

With new head coach Pat Shurmur to call plays and take an active role in the offense, the Browns' need for an offensive coordinator might not be as acute as it would have been if they had hired a coach with a defensive background. Whipple figures to have input on offense, especially if no coordinator is hired.
