The Cowboys named Rob Ryan as the team's defensive coordinator on Wednesday. Ryan replaces Paul Pasqualoni, who became the club's defensive coordinator midway through the 2010 season. Ryan, who has 24 years of coaching experience and 13 years of NFL experience, has spent the previous seven years as an NFL?defensive coordinator — with the Raiders (2004-08) and Browns (2009-10.

He inherits a Dallas stop unit that ranked 23rd last season under Wade Phillips, who was fired as the team's head coach and defensive play-caller on Nov. 9.

Ryan is the twin brother of Jets head coach Rex Ryan and the son of former Eagles and Cardinals head coach Buddy Ryan.

The Cowboys have an elite outside linebacker in DeMarcus Ware and several other top players, but failed to jell this season, resulting in multiple blowout losses in the middle of the season. Ryan's unit with the Browns ranked 22nd in 2010, but a solid 13th in points allowed. However, Cleveland's unit had far less talent than the coach will work with in Dallas.

The way we see it

Ryan is a well-respected coach, and this is a good move for the Cowboys and new head coach Jason Garrett. Dallas should be a more aggressive team under their new coordinator, who loves to bring pressure with blitzes.
