Former 49ers head coach Mike Singletary is close to a deal that would make him the Vikings' linebackers coach, according to Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network.

Singletary was fired on Dec. 26 after failing to make the playoffs with San Francisco. Before being the Niners' head coach, the Hall of Fame middle linebacker was the linebackers coach for the Ravens and 49ers.

Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier was a teammate of Singletary's from 1981-85 with the Bears. Another of player on those Chicago teams, Ron Rivera, is now the head coach of the Panthers, and he also wanted to hire Singletary.

The way we see it

It's quite a fall from head coach to linebackers coach, but the transition should fit Singletary well. He has proven to be a good position coach, and LB Patrick Willis emerged as one of the game's best players during his time under Singletary's guidance. In Minnesota he will work with a talented group of players, including E.J. Henderson and Chad Greenway.
