With TEs Jeff King, who has started all but two games over the past four seasons for Carolina, and Dante Rosario due to become free agents this offseason, the Panthers are mulling changes at tight end. Those two players, and Gary Barnidge, who is the only tight end the team has under contract for 2011, shared time at the position in the past, but new head coach Ron Rivera indicated that he'll be open to acquiring a more complete tight end this offseason. Carolina's tight ends were not utilized as receivers very much during former head coach John Fox's tenure (2002-2010) and no Panthers tight end has made more than 46 grabs in a season since 1999. Rob Chudzinski is rumored to be Rivera's top choice to fill Carolina's vacancy at offensive coordinator. He worked with TE Antonio Gates during his two stints as the Chargers' tight ends coach and he also helped develop TEs Jeremy Shockey and Kellen Winslow while he served as an assistant at the University of Miami.
