The 49ers have hired Vic Fangio as their defensive coordinator, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. Fangio has previously been the defensive coordinator for the Panthers, Colts and Texans before teaming with current San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh at Stanford last season.

Greg Manusky, the 49ers' defensive coordinator the past four seasons, was hired Friday by the Chargers in the same role.

The acquisition of Fangio brings the top three coaches from the 12-1 Cardinal to San Francisco, as Greg Roman was hired earlier on Friday as offensive coordinator.

The way we see it

Fangio is an experienced NFL coach and should be able to help Harbaugh in his transition to the pros. He is likely to run a similar 3-4 defense to Manusky's, allowing the 49ers' top defensive players, such as ILB Patrick Willis, to continue to perform at a high level.
