Former Bears and Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt met with Bills coaches Thursday, potentially regarding an opening on the Buffalo staff.

Wannstedt, who was recently dismissed as the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh, met with head coach Chan Gailey and the other defensive coaches at the team's facility in Orchard Park, N.Y. The team has an opening at inside linebackers coach.

"It's not me he needs to meet with," Gailey said to Chris Brown of "He's meeting with the defensive staff, which is the biggest meeting. He and I have known each other a long time, and I have a great deal of respect for Dave."

The two coaches know each other well, as Gailey was the offensive coordinator for the Dolphins in 2000 and '01 when Wannstedt was the head coach. Miami made the playoffs in both seasons.

The way we see it

While it's unlikely that a veteran coach like Wannstedt would accept the role of inside linebackers coach, Gailey might consider bringing him on board as some type of defensive consultant or assistant head coach. The Bills were horrible on defense in 2010 and could use an experienced voice like Wannstedt's.
