Packers 60-second rant: Win over Falcons won't come easily

If you remember my last rant a week ago, then you know I like the Packers to win the Super Bowl. You have to love the way they’ve been playing for the last month now, finishing 3-1 in a four-game stretch of games with bona fide playoff intensity (the Patriots, Giants and Bears before the wild-card win against the Eagles), with the one loss coming down to the wire against New England, who I believe will be facing the Packers again on Super Sunday.

First things first, though, like the need to catch some serious Saturday-night playoff fever at the Georgia Dome four nights from now against a Falcons team that has lost only two games at home the last three years.

It’s funny how easy the Falcons are to overlook. For a team that finished with the best record in the NFC at 13-3, they just seem so relatively ordinary, don’t they? I mean, their head coach’s name is “Mike Smith.”

Might as well be “Joe Blow,” as far as a lot of less-than-die-hard football followers are concerned when it comes to Smith, who is happy to let the Rex Ryans and the Bill Belichicks and the Pete Carrolls (still can’t believe the number the Seahawks did on the Saints!!!) grab all the attention while he just coaches his ass off and wins games.

Back in Week 12, the Packers and Falcons beat each other up in a heart-pounding, back-and-forth battle ultimately won by Atlanta 20-17, despite the fact the Falcons were outgained 418-294. I have every reason to believe a very similar type of game will take place this Saturday night, with the team that ends up making the fewer mistakes probably taking on the Bears for the NFC championship one week later.

I see a Packers-Bears III matchup in the making. But I see the Falcons making it a lot more difficult on the Packers this week than the Bears will next week.

That Mike Smith guy can coach. And ordinarily, he kicks ass at home.
