If the Broncos want Mike Mularkey as their head coach, they are going to have to wait until the Falcons are eliminated from the playoffs.

Mularkey, who is Atlanta's offensive coordinator, canceled his interview with the Broncos that was scheduled for Friday. He told the team he wanted to wait until the Falcons' season was completed before interviewing for another position. ESPN reported that Mularkey is still scheduled to interview with the Browns on Saturday for their head coaching job, but he didn't want to be away from the Falcons for consecutive days leading up to their divisional-round playoff game on Jan. 15.

John Elway, the newly-named executive VP of football operations for the Broncos, tweeted, "I respect the decision that Mike Mularkey has made to not interview with the Broncos at this time." Elway is leading the team's search for a new head coach.

The way we see it

Denver is already set to pay former coaches Mike Shanahan and Josh McDaniels next season, and with Elway returning to the organization, the team is likely to stay away from the high-profile coaches and instead go with a coordinator. Mularkey fits the profile perfectly of what the Broncos are looking for, so don't be surprised if the team waits for the Falcons season to end so they can get their man.
