With his first full season now in the books, we hear the verdict remains very much out on 49ers 2009 first-round draft pick Michael Crabtree. "If you ask management, he's an example of a guy who probably needs to be a centerpiece," a team insider said of the enigmatic wideout. "But he's got to step up. I know (WR coach) Jerry Sullivan likes (No. 2 WR) Josh Morgan better." There continues to be no doubt about Crabtree's natural ability. "He's got what you call great 'late hands' with his ability to snatch the ball out of mid-air. He's a good route runner, and he's smart." But his attitude and work ethic — his altercation in a walk-through late in the preseason with TE Vernon Davis, who accused Crabtree of dogging it, continues to leave a bad taste — are red flags that have been hard to overlook. "He's just a real strange guy." the insider said. "You really have to wonder if he is as motivated as he needs to be."
