In a discussion with the local media on Wednesday, Lions GM Martin Mayhew revealed the OLB Julian Peterson, who was benched for the team's Week 17 victory over the Vikings, would not be back in 2011.

"I will address that. I met with Julian on Monday and we had a great meeting," Mayhew said. "I thanked him for his two years of service to the organization. Anytime you have 31 straight starts for a team, you've given a lot of blood, sweat and tears to make that happen, but I thanked him and told him we're not going to bring him back. We shook hands and parted ways. I think it's time to move on.''

Peterson, an 11-year NFL veteran out of Michigan State, started 14 games for the Lions this past season, registering 83 tackles and a career-low one sack. The 32-year-old was acquired by Detroit in March 2009 in a trade for DT Cory Redding. Peterson, a five-time Pro Bowler, has 51½ sacks and eight interceptions in his career. He played the first six years of his career with the 49ers before moving to the Seahawks via free agency.
