The Patriots signed former third-round DL Atiyyah Ellison to their 53-man roster late Tuesday.
The Panthers selected Ellison in the third round of the 2005 draft out of Missouri. He was signed to the active roster for 10 games in 2005 before being waived following training camp in 2006. He has spent time with the Texans, Ravens, 49ers, Jaguars and Chiefs since.
In 2009, Ellison played in 15 games for the Jaguars, starting six. He recorded 16 tackles, one sack and one pass defensed.
The Patriots also added DL Marlon Favorite, a first-year player out of LSU, to their practice squad.
The way we see it
Ellison brings much-needed depth to the Patriots' defensive line before they start their playoff run. Rookie DE Brandon Deaderick has been suspended, DE Ron Brace was placed on injured reserve and DL Mike Wright has been out with a concussion. DT Myron Pryor returned from injury in Week 17, but there is not a lot of experience nor talent behind Vince Wilfork and Gerard Warren.
