Jim Tomsula has been introduced as the 49ers' interim coach for the final week of the season, replacing Mike Singletary, who was fired last evening.

Team president Jed York said the team was disappointed that they missed the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season.

"We had expectations to be a playoff-caliber team this year," York said at a Monday afternoon press conference. "We didn't care if we were a 7-9 division winner, we wanted a chance to compete for a Super Bowl."

York confirmed that linebackers coach Vantz Singletary (Mike Singletary's nephew) and pass rush specialist Al Harris had also been let go. He said that the team's new GM will hire the next head coach.

Tomsula told reporters that he is not focused on much besides the Week 17 game vs. the Cardinals at Candlestick Park.

"Our long-terms goals are winning on Sunday," Tomsula said.

The way we see it

The choice to remove Singletary was not a surprise, as the Niners have been one of the league's greatest disappointments this season. As soon as the team was officially eliminated from winning their division, York chose to make the switch.  Now the team must decide which direction that want to head in next, though it appears highly unlikely that Tomsula will be the head coach for much more than this one week.
