The 49ers are in must-win mode with two weeks to play and the team has announced Troy Smith will be their starting quarterback for at least the first of those games, this coming Sunday against the Rams.
Head coach Mike Singletary announced on Thursday that Troy Smith was the choice instead of Alex Smith, who had been the starter the past two weeks. The 49ers went 1-1 in those games and are 2-7 overall in the games Alex Smith has started this season. Troy Smith is 3-2 as a starter this year, throwing four touchdowns to three interceptions.
San Francisco needs to win out if they want to make the playoffs; they would also need the Seahawks to lose one of their final two games.
The way we see it
Picking Troy Smith was the correct choice for Singletary and the Niners. He gives the team the best chance to win this week in St. Louis with his arm and his legs.
