Steelers SS Troy Polamalu will not play Thursday night against the Panthers.
The safety is suffering from both an Achilles tendon strain and an ankle injury and hasn't practiced all week. He did not play in Pittsburgh's 22-17 loss to the Jets last week.
The team does not plan to put Polamalu on injured reserve and expects him to be ready for the playoffs, according to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora.
The way we see it
Polamalu probably could play if it was absolutely necessary, but with the Steelers already in the playoffs — and the fact that the Panthers' offense ranks last in the league — there's no need to have him play and risk further injury.
This move emphasizes the fact that Pittsburgh wants its star safety to get healthy for the postseason.
