The 49ers are going back to the other Smith.

Troy Smith will step in for San Francisco this Sunday against the Rams, sending Alex Smith to the bench after a subpar performance in the Niners' 34-7 loss to the Chargers. Alex Smith completed 19-of-29 passes for 165 yards and one interception in the nationally televised loss last Thursday evening.

Troy Smith has a 3-2 record in five starts this season and has thrown four TD passes and three interceptions. The former Heisman winner played well against St. Louis in Week 10, connecting on 17-of-28 passes for 356 yards and a touchdown.

The way we see it

With the 49ers still very much in the playoff race at 5-9, head coach Mike Singletary can't afford to go with an ineffective quarterback. Troy Smith has shown success against this week's NFC West rival and gives San Francisco its best chance in a must-win game.

Fantasy spin

Troy Smith has proven he can get it done against the Rams and has added fantasy value with his ability to run. Smith could be a good quarterback pick up in deep leagues.
