49ers head coach Mike Singletary won't say which Smith will start at quarterback for Sunday's game against the Rams.

The Niners are in must-win mode, trailing the Seahawks and Rams by one game in the dismal NFC West. Singletary said he talked to both QB Alex Smith and Troy Smith and that each will get reps in practice.

Alex Smith, the opening day starter, has started the last two games for San Fran. He threw for just 165 yards and a pick in the loss to the Chargers in Week 15.

When Alex Smith was out with a shoulder injury, Troy Smith started five games, going 3-2 throwing four touchdowns and three interceptions.

The way we see it

This could be a little gamesmanship by Singletary before the must-win game in St. Louis on Sunday. The preseason favorites in the division still have a chance to clinch the West. Troy Smith provides a little more mobility while Alex Smith has a better arm. Singletary might take this decision to game time.
