Panthers DE Tyler Brayton has been fined $15,000 for hitting an opposing gunner while Brayton was on the sideline.
In last week's game vs. the Falcons, Brayton hit Atlanta's Christopher Owens while Owens was covering a punt along the Carolina sideline. Brayton came off the bench to interfere with Owens, knocking him down after the Falcons player had been blocked into the Panthers bench area.
The way we see it
This play has generated far less coverage and discussion then the similar infraction by Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi, but what Brayton did appears worse. He clearly came off the bench to interfere with Owens, who was already out of the play as a result of the good blocking by Brayton's teammates. Based on the other punishments the NFL has handed out this season, it is surprising that this warranted a fine of only $15,000.
