The Texans have placed three players on injured reserve, including Pro Bowl DE Mario Williams.

Williams has been suffering from an aggravated sports hernia, which limited his role in the Texans' 34-28 overtime loss to the Ravens on Monday night. He has never missed a game in his NFL career.

OG Mike Brisiel (shoulder) and WR David Anderson (shoulder) were also placed on I.R.

To replace Williams, Brisiel and Anderson on the roster, the Texans signed rookie WR Derrick Townsel and rookie DT Malcolm Sheppard from the practice squad. The Texans are also expected to sign former Broncos and Patriots DE Jarvis Green, PFW learned earlier Wednesday.

The way we see it

Williams has played through a variety of injuries throughout his career, but the sports hernia became more and more of a concern recently and clearly affected him on Monday. One of the AFC's top pass rushers, Williams is an integral part of the Texans' defense. Mark Anderson and Tim Jamison are likely to have expanded roles in his absence.

Brisiel will be replaced by Antoine Caldwell, while Anderson's role as the No. 4 receiver could be filled by rookie Dorin Dickerson.
