Head coach Jim Schwartz expressed surprising optimism for the Lions, saddled with a 2-10 record and amid their 10th straight losing season, for one major reason: QB Matthew Stafford. Sure, Schwartz loves Calvin Johnson and Ndamukong Suh and plenty of the rest of his team, but Schwartz clearly pinned the future of his team — one he sees as bright — on the shoulders of Stafford. "There are a lot of keys to this league," he said. "I got up here two years ago and said, 'Obviously, the most important player on the team is the quarterback,' and I think we picked a very good one and we've developed a very good one." Right now, though, one of his shoulders is injured, and though there has been talk of Stafford coming back after Christmas, having started a light throwing routine this week, it's possible that the QB won't get his chance to help turn around the Lions until next season.
