Jamaal Charles has run this season as though he wants to be the Chiefs' running back of the future, and on Saturday, he signed a contract extension that made it official.

Charles and the team have agreed on a five-year, $32.5 million contract extension with $13 million guaranteed, according to NFL.com. The running back is currently in the last year of his rookie contract, and the extension will kick in next season.

The former third-round pick has rushed for a career-high 1,137 yards so far this season and is averaging a league-high 6.2 yards per carry.

The way we see it

GM Scott Pioli is trying to build the Chiefs in the same way he built the Patriots earlier in the decade, and that starts with locking up core players. Charles is obviously a talented runner and should be a threat to Kansas City's opponents for many years to come.
