Chiefs QB Matt Cassel is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Chargers, meaning backup Brodie Croyle will likely start.
Cassel underwent an emergency appendectomy on Wednesday and did not practice all week. Head coach Todd Haley said, "He's going to be listed as did not practice today and doubtful, and that's where I'll leave it."
Croyle has started nine games since entering the league in 2006, losing every one. He has worked with the first team since Wednesday. The 8-4 Chiefs lead the AFC West by two games over the Chargers heading into Sunday's showdown. Cassel has thrown 23 touchdowns and four interceptions.
The way we see it
The Chargers could find a way back into the AFC West title hunt thanks to Cassel being out. Croyle will have his work cut out for him against the Chargers' top-ranked passing defense. Look for the Chiefs to pound it on the ground and rely on their defense to get a victory.
Owners who had been enjoying Cassel's success will have to go to another quarterback. This could also hurt Dwayne Bowe's fantasy value. Owners of Jamaal Charles shouldn't get too excited, as the Chargers could be loading up the box.
