Former Bears coach Dave Wannstedt resigned as the head football coach at the University of Pittsburgh after a disappointing 7-5 season.
He appeared to be stepping down under pressure from the school, after the Panthers suffered blowout losses to Miami and West Virginia earlier this season.
Wannstedt had signed a contract extension to stay at Pitt through 2014 earlier this year. He will remain at the school as a special assistant to the athletic director.
Wannstedt joined the Bears in 1993, replacing coach Mike Ditka. He coached for six seasons in Chicago, recording a 40-56 record, before being replaced by Dick Jauron in '99. He also served as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2000-04.
