The early minus-9½-point spread for the Packers over the Niners is their third biggest margin this season — behind their 14½-point edge over the Lions in Week Four, a game in which they barely squeaked by Detroit, and their 12½-point margin over the Bills in Week Two, which they covered quite handily with a lopsided 34-7 victory. Will the Packers beat the Niners convincingly today? I think so, but not so convincing that the Niners will fail to cover the spread. In their must-win over Arizona last Monday night, the Niners showed some real emotion. Contrary to some rumors I’ve heard, it really looks like the San Francisco players are still giving their all for head coach Mike Singletary.

Singletary, a former Bear who faced the Packers in many a brawl, will definitely have his troops motivated for this game. But they’re still going to lose by eight points.

Prediction: Packers 30, Niners 22
