Lions' Smith still has plenty of promise

CB Alphonso Smith, by most accounts, has been a success story in Detroit since coming over in a trade from the Broncos, but he came under fire for his poor play in the Thanksgiving Day loss to the Patriots. Yet the Lions still believe Smith, who is a hard worker, will be fine. He spends a lot of time watching film and perfecting his technique and could turn out to be another Dré Bly, perhaps even a little more well-rounded in his craft. Smith has good instincts, but he tends to gamble when there is a play to be made on the ball. That gambling nature was what hurt him in allowing a 79-yard touchdown to Patriots WR Deion Branch. Although Smith also had a poor attempt at a tackle on that play, that was probably more of an exception, as he has shown a willingness to hit all season before and since then.
