The Seahawks certainly have had their share of problems on defense lately. But one defender who continues to stand out despite some occasional rookie mistakes is fleet-footed first-round FS Earl Thomas, whose five interceptions already have tied Michael Boulware’s team record for most interceptions by a rookie. “In the ’Bandit’ defense that they’ve been going with so much lately, he has been a true center fielder,” one team insider said of Thomas, who also has more than earned his keep on special teams, as evidenced by his heads-up return of a blocked punt for a touchdown in Week 12. “They just love his speed, his sideline-to-sideline range and especially his instincts. On that (blocked) punt, he just seemed to come out of nowhere.” Thomas has been far from perfect, occasionally being guilty of overpursuing and missing tackles. “But lately everybody on defense has been doing that,” the observer said.
