Our sources in Packerland were hardly surprised when GM Ted Thompson saw fit to give CB Tramon Williams a new four-year, $33 million contract that made him the Packers’ fourth-highest-paid player in terms of average yearly salary. But whether Thompson gives out any more new deals as the season progresses remains to be seen. The next most likely Packer to be filling his wallet with new bills could be ILB Desmond Bishop, who has come on like gangbusters in place of the injured Nick Barnett. Bishop has gone from previously being an inconsistent, mistake-prone performer to a godsend for the Packers’ defense, no doubt greatly improving his stock in the upcoming free-agent market should that option even exist. With fellow LB Brandon Chillar just being added to Green Bay’s lengthy injured-reserve list, team insiders think Bishop might have to play every snap for a very depleted LB corps.
