Vikings RB Adrian Peterson has a sprain of his right ankle, interim coach Leslie Frazier said in a radio interview Tuesday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

Peterson had an MRI on the ankle Monday after being injured in the second quarter of the team's win at Washington on Sunday.

Vikings players had Tuesday off but will return to practice Wednesday. At that time the club will have a better idea as to whether the sprain is likely to cause Peterson to miss any action. The Vikings host Buffalo on Sunday.

DE Ray Edwards also sprained his right ankle Sunday, said Frazier, who said the injury was similar to Peterson's.

The way we see it

With the Vikings' passing game struggling this season, Peterson is the primary driver of the team's offense. If he's unable to play, or plays at significantly less than 100 percent, the 4-7 Vikings may have a difficult time taking advantage of the Bills' 32nd-ranked run defense, in which case the game could be a difficult matchup considering how well Buffalo has played in recent weeks. Rookie Toby Gerhart is Peterson's backup.
