The 49ers placed RB Frank Gore on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday with a fractured right hip. He's expected to undergo more tests to determine the severity of the injury, which could potentially keep him sidelined into next season.

The loss of their leading rusher and team leader is a big blow to the 49ers, who have won four of their last six games following an 0-5 start and are only one game out of first place in the NFC West.

Veteran Brian Westbrook is expected to inherit Gore's role as the starter. The former Eagle had only 10 touches all season before carrying the ball 23 times for 136 yards in the 27-6 victory at Arizona on Monday night. Rookie RB Anthony Dixon will also play a bigger role in the offense in Gore's absence.

Besides the loss of Gore, the 49ers placed WR Dominique Zeigler on I.R. with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The team promoted S Chris Maragos and ex-Packers RB DeShawn Wynn from its practice squad to fill the roster spots vacated by Gore and Zeigler.

Niners head coach Mike Singletary proclaimed PK Joe Nedney recovered from a right knee strain, enabling the team to waive his two-week replacement, Shane Andrus.  The club also released OT Xavier Fulton from the practice squad.
