The Dolphins activated DE Phillip Merling from their reserve/non-football injury list just minutes before a deadline that would have kept him on the sideline for the rest of the season. Third-string QB Patrick Ramsey was waived to create space for Merling on the 53-man roster.
Merling has missed the entire season up to now after having been charged with aggravated battery following an incident in May involving his pregnant girlfriend. The team had until 5 p.m. ET Tuesday to decide whether he would join the active roster or not.
The 2008 second-round pick played in all 16 games in each of his first two seasons, registering 59 career tackles and 3½ sacks.
Ramsey was signed on Nov. 15 following a season-ending injury to QB Chad Pennington.
The way we see it
We don't know what kind of physical or mental shape Merling is in after being sidelined for so long and dealing with many legal issues. His return should help the Dolphins' depth on the defensive line, while the loss of Ramsey should have little impact, as Chad Henne has returned as the team's starting QB with Tyler Thigpen as his backup.
