The Bills placed LB Shawne Merriman on injured reserve Saturday, before the three-time Pro Bowler ever played a game for Buffalo.

Claimed off waivers from the Chargers, Merriman aggravated his right Achilles tendon injury two weeks ago in his first practice with the Bills. Merriman will be a free agent after the season.

The Bills also placed LB Keith Ellison (knee) on I.R. and promoted WR Naaman Roosevelt and LB Thomas Williams to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

The way we see it

Could the Bills have worse luck? They made a splash by claiming Merriman, only to see him never play a down, and he will likely be somewhere else in 2011. The Bills have now placed five linebackers on I.R. this season.
