Hodges, Browns agree to extension

P Reggie Hodges and the Browns have agreed on a two-year contract extension, keeping the punter off the free agent market.

Hodges took over as the team's punter midway through last season following a knee injury to Dave Zastudil after punting for the Rams, Eagles, Jets and Titans from 2005-09. This year he has a net average of 39.5 with 19 kicks downed inside the 20. He also had a 68-yard run on a fake punt in Cleveland's Week Seven upset of the Saints.

He would have been a restricted free agent this offseason.

The way we see it

Locking up top, young players is always important, regardless of position. Hodges has proven to be a very good punter and the Browns are wise to not let him hit the open market.
