Chargers still committed to Mathews, but concerns linger

To say that Chargers RB Ryan Mathews has had a disappointing rookie season is an understatement. Missing two full games and parts of others due to various injuries, the No. 12 overall pick has never been able to establish a rhythm this year, seeing double-digit carries only three times. We hear that while the organization is upset that Mathews hasn't made the instant impact they'd hoped for, San Diego is not yet concerned about the back's long-term potential. Two things the Bolts could he worried about, though, are his fumbling issues and psyche. We're told that Mathews, who has three fumbles (all lost) in 87 carries, has a technical problem in this area, as he runs high and makes it easy for defenders to strip the ball. Also, the Fresno State product does not have a history of responding well to adversity, so how he reacts to this tumultuous campaign will be something the Chargers monitor closely in the weeks and months to come.
