The Panthers signed S Gerald Alexander on Tuesday and waived WR Devin Thomas. They also added QB Keith Null to their practice squad.

Thomas has been a huge disappointment this season. He played in only one game with the Panthers since being cut by the Redskins. The 'Skins were hoping for big things from Thomas, who had three touchdowns last season.

Alexander started three games for the Jaguars this season, recording 16 tackles and three passes defended.

Null started four games as a rookie with the Rams last season. The Panthers hope rookie QB Jimmy Clausen (concussion) will be cleared to play this week. Brian St. Pierre started last Sunday's contest.

The way we see it

Panthers reserve safeties Jordan Pugh and Marcus Hudson are hurt, so Alexander adds depth to the position. Null provides another QB for the practice squad, so should Clausen continue to be out, head coach John Fox has another option.
