The Browns signed former Jaguars and Patriots LB Eric Alexander and placed LB Blake Costanzo on injured reserve, the club announced Tuesday.
Alexander, 28, most recently played for the Jaguars, appearing in four games and making two special-teams stops earlier this season. Alexander played for New England from 2004-09.
Costanzo suffered a groin injury in the Browns' 24-20 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday. The 26-year-old Costanzo primarily contributed on special teams, notching seven tackles in 10 games.
The Browns also made a few changes to their practice squad, signing OL John Malecki and RB Quinn Porter and releasing OL Jeff Hansen and RB Martell Mallett.
The way we see it
Head coach Eric Mangini was a defensive assistant in New England for Alexander's first two NFL seasons. Alexander has 42 career special-teams tackles and plays the same position as Costanzo. In short, this is a logical signing for Cleveland.
