Lions not running from ground problems

Running the ball has proven to be a difficult endeavor this season for the Lions, who believed the addition of Jahvid Best would inject life into that facet of the offense. But two painful turf toes have been a big reason why the team has struggles to churn out yards on the ground, as Best has been held in check pretty much since Week Two, not showing the explosiveness he displayed in the preseason. The club is not worried about Best long term, but the words of fearful scouts — that Best would be susceptible to sprinter-type injuries such as these — are starting to ring a bit louder now. Backup Kevin Smith, the former starter, has seen his role grow minimally since returning to the lineup, and though he has been a good soldier it's clear he would like more opportunities to run the ball. Although the offensive line has done a decent job in terms of pass blocking, we hear that the lack of a true road grader up front also has held the run game back in some respects.
