Panthers place RB Williams on I.R.

The Panthers have placed RB DeAngelo Williams on injured reserve.

Williams, who suffered a foot sprain in Carolina's Week Seven win over the 49ers, has been unable to contribute since suffering the injury and wouldn't have been able to return for 2-3 weeks.

With the Panthers at 1-8 and showing no signs of turning things around the rest of the way, the team chose to fill the roster spot with OG C.J. Davis, rather than wait for the return of the franchise's all-time leading rusher.

The season-ending move could mean an end to Williams' career with the Panthers, as his contract expires at the end of the season.

The way we see it

Williams, who will likely be looking for a big contract after this season, was unlikely to take any risks in his return to a team that basically has no chance of making the playoffs.

With reserve RBs Jonathan Stewart and Tyrell Sutton continuing to miss practice, Carolina will again turn to unproven backs in Mike Goodson and Josh Vaughan.

The Panthers could be without QB Jimmy Clausen (concussion), as well. The rookie didn't practice on Wednesday, and with Matt Moore (shoulder) on I.R., Carolina could be forced to go with Tony Pike or Brian St. Pierre under center.

Fantasy spin

While Goodson (23-100-0) and Vaughan (TD) played well last week, they're not likely to repeat those performances against a Ravens defense that held Michael Turner less than 40 yards last Thursday. Add in the uncertainty around Stewart and Sutton, and it would be best to stay away from Panthers' running backs this week.
