Here's our weekly look at the contributions made by Browns rookies this season:
CB Joe Haden (first round): Haden replaced the injured Sheldon Brown at right cornerback in Week 10 and notched six tackles and his second interception of the season in the Browns' 26-20 loss to the Jets. The downside to Haden's interception: It pinned Cleveland on its three-yard line late in overtime. When the Browns could not convert a first down, they had to punt, and the Jets ended up with the ball on the Cleveland 37 with 24 seconds left. Nevertheless, it's hard to find fault with Haden for the interception — the instinct is to catch the ball — and he made a very nice play on the ball in the air to come down with the pick. Overall, Haden has had a solid rookie season, and he figures to be a starter in 2011, if not sooner.
S T.J. Ward (second round): Ward recorded seven more tackles in Week 10 and defended two passes. One negative: He was unable to bring down Jets WR Santonio Holmes on Holmes' 37-yard TD to end the game, with Holmes making a quick move and leaving Ward and two other Browns defenders behind on his way to the endzone. On balance, though, Ward has had an impressive rookie year, recording a team-best 75 tackles on the season.
QB Colt McCoy (third round): McCoy completed 18-of-31 passes for 205 yards with one TD and no interceptions in the 26-20 OT loss to the Jets. He connected on passes of 11, 17 and 18 yards before throwing the game-tying TD to Mohamed Massaquoi with 44 seconds left in regulation. Head coach Eric Mangini said Monday that the club would soon be making a decision on their starting quarterback going forward in 2010, and through four games, in our view, McCoy rates strong consideration for the job.
OG Shawn Lauvao (third round): Lauvao could make his first regular-season start vs. Jacksonville in Week 11 after Billy Yates suffered a season-ending biceps injury vs. the Jets on Sunday. Lauvao had a strong start to training camp before suffering an ankle injury. He's appeared in three games this season.
SS Larry Asante (fifth round): He was waived on Sept. 4 and signed to the Browns' practice squad the next day.
WR Carlton Mitchell (sixth round): Mitchell was inactive in Week 10. He's appeared in two games this season, starting none.
DL Travis Ivey (undrafted free agent): Waived from the roster on Sept. 4 and re-signed to the practice squad Sept. 5.
DL Brian Sanford (undrafted free agent): Promoted from the practice squad to the active roster on Nov. 13, Sanford was inactive for the Week 10 game vs. the Jets. Sanford played collegiately at Temple.
Notes: RB Montario Hardesty (second round, No. 59) is on injured reserve after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the Browns' final preseason game. ... DE Clifton Geathers (sixth round, No. 186) was waived by the Browns on Sept. 4. The Dolphins claimed him on Sept. 5, waived him from their roster on Sept. 14, re-signed him to the practice squad Sept. 15 and waived him from the practice squad Sept. 18. ... WR Johnathan Haggerty (undrafted free agent) was waived/injured on Aug. 16 with a foot injury and is currently on Cleveland's injured-reserve list.
