The Dolphins have signed Patrick Ramsey and will make him their second-string quarterback behind Tyler Thigpen for their Thursday-night game with the Bears. Week 10 starter Chad Pennington was placed on injured reserve.

Ramsey last started an NFL game in 2005, then with the Redskins. He has since been on the rosters of the Jets, Broncos, Lions and Jaguars, but hasn't thrown a pass since Oct. 2008.

The 31-year-old QB was signed following injuries to Pennington and Chad Henne in Week 10. The team is hopeful Henne will be able to play soon after sustaining a knee injury, but Pennington's shoulder injury was season-ending, and possibly career-ending.

The way we see it

Ramsey is a solid insurance policy behind Thigpen and the team is hopeful that he is pushed back to a third-string choice if Henne can heal quickly. Miami next plays in three days but then has a 10-day break before their Week 12 game vs. the Raiders, which should give Ramsey time to learn more of the playbook and for Henne's knee to heal.
