49ers head coach Mike Singletary confirmed Friday that QB Troy Smith will start Sunday's game against the Rams.
Alex Smith separated his left shoulder in a loss to the Panthers on Oct. 24 and Smith led the Niners to a 24-16 victory over the Broncos in London in Week Eight. The 49ers had a bye in Week Nine.
QB David Carr will be the backup.
The way we see it
On a team with two No. 1 overall draft picks, Smith, a Heisman winner, gets the nod again to start at QB, although Smith could return when he is healthy. Smith was accurate in his start, completing 12-of-19 passes for 196 yards and a TD. He also added a rushing touchdown and brings mobility to the position. Smith started two games in 2007 with the Ravens.
The Rams defense has been improved this season and is 16th against the pass. If you need a spot start at QB (which could be many teams as Drew Brees, Philip Rivers and Aaron Rodgers are all on bye), Smith is not a bad option.
