Portis' role remains unclear with Redskins

RB Clinton Portis hopes to return to the Redskins' lineup on Monday against the Eagles, having rehabbed his tender groin the past several weeks thoroughly. However, there have been a few minor setbacks along the way with swelling, and his status remains in limbo. But whenever he comes back, Portis likely will have to earn back some of the role he has lost to Ryan Torain. Although Torain has dealt with his own injuries, sitting out part of the second half of the Week Eight loss to the Lions, he has shown he can be a lead back in this offense. Portis has the name and the career to stand on, but it's not clear exactly how he will help this team when he does come back. Taking too many carries away from Torain would be a mistake, one source says. And though Portis can help out in the passing game (he's an excellent pass protector and able short receiver), he certainly will want to prove he can carry some of the load as a runner.
