Much of the talk after Wade Phillips was fired was centered on who the Cowboys would pursue to be their next head coach, but the way we hear it, interim coach Jason Garrett has a real opportunity to get the job permanently — and he wouldn't have accepted the interim position if he didn't think he had a realistic chance to keep it. Owner Jerry Jones certainly could chase a big-name coach, and Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden are popular possibilities for fans to consider. Jones' chummy relationship with Panthers head coach John Fox, whose deal runs out after this season, also has made news. There also are qualified candidates such as Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, whose 3-4 experience could make the transition an easy one. But Jones knows what he has in Garrett, and a strong finish this season will make Garrett a legitimate candidate to remain as the Cowboys' head coach.
