Bills LB Shawne Merriman left Wednesday's practice with a lower leg injury.

The newly acquired linebacker aggravated the leg during individual position drills while pivoting off his right foot. Trainers examined Merriman's right Achilles before he left the field.

Merriman had previously been on injured reserve with a minor injury designation in San Diego with calf and Achilles problems.

The way we see it

The Bills were depending on Merriman to improve their 26th-ranked defense. Buffalo was expected to switch back to a 3-4 scheme with the three-time Pro Bowler on their roster, but they could be forced to stick with the 4-3 scheme if Merriman is not able to contribute.
