Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson has agreed to a contract extension with the team, expected to be five years for just over $34 million, with $15 million guaranteed. The news was first reported by FOX Sports' Adam Caplan.

Johnson has impressed head coach Todd Haley this season, leading the team in tackles with 65, along with three forced fumbles. The 2005 first-round pick would have been an unrestricted free agent next spring after signing a one-year, $2.475 million restricted free-agent tender last March.

The way we see it

Kansas City is intent on locking up its young players, and that starts with Johnson. He has been great this season and has been rewarded with a good deal from the team.
