Fake punt still in Jets' playbook

A communication breakdown and lack of awareness resulted in a botched fake punt for the Jets in Week Eight, but don't expect the team to stop trying to fool opponents just because their attempt didn't work.

P Steve Weatherford and special-teams coach Mike Westhoff discussed the idea of a fake punt early on in the game vs. the Packers, as they noticed there was room on the right side of the Green Bay line to run. Westhoff had planned on calling for the fake midway through the first quarter, but after Mark Sanchez was sacked on 3rd-and-9 for a loss of nine, the coach elected to kick away. The punter ran anyway, but was pushed out of bounds a yard shy of the first down.

Weatherford, an exceptional athlete for his position, ran twice in 2009, gaining 26 and 16 yards. A team insider said the Jets won't abandon their fake calls just because it didn't work the first time, but that the coach and punter will both be clear on the play call next time before it happens.
