Charlie Whitehurst will make his first-ever NFL start on Sunday, as the Seahawks announced that QB Matt Hasselbeck is out with a concussion.

Hasselbeck has missed practice all week and has not passed the head injury tests the NFL requires for players who have suffered concussions. He has completed 57 percent of passes this season, throwing for six TDs and seven INTs for the 4-3 Seahawks.

Head coach Pete Carroll tweeted: "Disappointed for Matt but this is best for his health. We're really looking forward to seeing Charlie go to work!"

Whitehurst was acquired in March from the Chargers, in exchange for a third-round draft pick and a swap of second-round choices. He has yet to throw a pass in his five-year pro career.

Undrafted rookie Zac Robinson will be the team's backup quarterback in Week Nine.

The way we see it

Seattle likely would want their veteran QB under center facing a tough Giants defense, but Hasslebeck's lingering head injuries make that impossible. Whitehurst will look to WR Mike Williams and TE John Carlson to bail him out with pressure in his face, and RB Marshawn Lynch to carry the load on the ground.
