The NFL has handed down its first substantial fine since sending a video emphasizing the types of hits that would merit fines and even suspensions.
Eagles LB Ernie Sims was fined $50,000 for striking a defenseless receiver in the Eagles' loss to the Titans on Oct. 24.
Sims has been fined for necessary roughness twice in his career, both times when he was a member of the Lions.
NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson told Sims that "further offenses will result in an escalation of fines up to and including suspension."
The way we see it
Since the NFL cracked down on hits after a violent weekend in Week Six by fining Steelers LB James Harrison $75,000, Patriots S Brandon Meriweather $50,000 and Falcons CB Dunta Robinson $50,000, few hits or plays have been heavily scrutinized. Sims is the first one to incur the NFL's wrath since the crackdown, and we now wait to see when the first suspension will occur.
