49ers TE Vernon Davis sprained his ankle during the first half of Sunday's game vs. the Broncos and is doubtful to return.

Davis had one catch for 12 yards in the first quarter but left the game following the injury. He is the team's leading receiver with 422 yards on the season.

The way we see it

Already playing backup QB Troy Smith, the 49ers can't really afford to be without top offensive players such as Davis. They have a bye next week, and hopefully Davis is ready to return in Week 10.
